The Beretta 92FS, adopted by the U.S. military as the M9, is a recoil-operated, semi-automatic pistol designed and manufactured by Beretta of Italy. Its design philosophy centered on creating a durable, high-capacity service pistol with a lighter weight than its all-steel predecessors, achieved through an aluminum alloy frame. The most distinguishing feature is the open-slide design, which exposes the barrel to reduce weight and facilitate ejection and cooling, though it can allow debris ingress. The 92FS/M9 utilizes a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger mechanism with a frame-mounted manual safety that also functions as a decocker. It is chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum and feeds from a double-stack magazine with a standard capacity of 15 rounds. The weapon gained immense prominence as the standard-issue sidearm of the United States Armed Forces from 1985 until its gradual replacement by the SIG Sauer M17/M18 in the 2010s. Its reputation is mixed; it is praised for its accuracy, reliability, and ergonomics, but criticized for its large grip size and the open slide's susceptibility to dirt. Despite this, it remains one of the most iconic and widely used military and law enforcement pistols in history, known for its sleek Italian design and robust service record.
