The Mossberg 590 is a rugged, pump‑action shotgun engineered for reliability in demanding law‑enforcement, military, and civilian environments. Originating from O.F. Mossberg & Sons' long tradition of utilitarian design, the 590 emphasizes a simple, low‑maintenance action, a steel receiver, and a synthetic stock that resists corrosion and harsh weather. Its primary purpose is tactical and defensive use, with a focus on rapid follow‑up shots, high ammunition capacity, and ease of field stripping. Distinguishing features include a dual‑action safety/trigger lever, a robust chrome‑lined barrel, and interchangeable barrel lengths ranging from 14 to 20 inches. The shotgun’s reputation rests on its durability, affordability, and the ability to accept a wide variety of aftermarket accessories, making it a staple among U.S. police departments, SWAT teams, and civilian home‑defense owners. Unique to the 590 line is the “tactical” configuration with a pistol grip, ghost‑ring rear sight, and a high‑capacity tube magazine, which together provide a blend of shotgun firepower and rifle‑like ergonomics rarely seen in pump‑action platforms.
