The Springfield Trapdoor is a single-shot rifle manufactured at the US Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, and served as the first standard-issue US military breech-loading rifle. The Trapdoor action involved a hinged breechblock that pivoted up and forward like a trapdoor to accept a cartridge. It represented the US military's transition from muzzle-loaders to metallic cartridge arms.

The Springfield Model 1861 was a .58 caliber percussion-lock rifled musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory and numerous private contractors during the American Civil War. It was the most widely used infantry weapon of the Union Army, with approximately one million units produced during the conflict.
