Beretta 8000 Cougar

Pistols

The Beretta 8000 Cougar is a semi-automatic pistol designed with a compact, robust frame and a unique rotating barrel locking system, a departure from the traditional tilting-barrel design common in many modern pistols. Its primary purpose was to serve law enforcement, military, and civilian markets, offering a reliable and accurate sidearm with a reduced recoil impulse. The key innovation of the Cougar is its rotating barrel mechanism, which locks the barrel into the slide via a cam pin that rotates the barrel as the slide cycles, providing a more consistent lockup and potentially improving accuracy. This system also allows for a shorter, more compact slide and frame compared to conventional pistols of similar barrel length. The Cougar is known for its excellent ergonomics, with a comfortable grip angle and ambidextrous safety/decocker on early models, though later variants simplified controls. Its reputation in the firearms community is that of a well-engineered, underappreciated pistol that offers a smooth shooting experience, though it was eventually overshadowed by the more popular Beretta 92 series and the polymer-framed Px4 Storm, which itself evolved from the Cougar's rotating barrel design. Notable design characteristics include an aluminum alloy frame, a double-action/single-action trigger system, and a slide-mounted safety/decocker. The Cougar was also produced under license by Stoeger in Turkey for a time, offering a more affordable option.

Canik Rival SFx

Pistols

The Canik Rival SFx is a competition-oriented, full-size striker-fired semi-automatic pistol designed for practical shooting sports such as USPSA and IPSC. Manufactured by the Turkish firearms company Canik (part of Samsun Yurt Savunma), the Rival SFx represents the company's flagship performance pistol, building upon the proven TP9 platform with extensive enhancements for competitive use. Its design philosophy centers on delivering an out-of-the-box race-ready pistol with features typically found on custom-built competition handguns, including a flat-faced aluminum trigger with a crisp, short reset, an adjustable trigger stop, and a competition-style slide with aggressive front and rear cocking serrations. The pistol incorporates a polymer frame with an interchangeable backstrap system, an extended beavertail, and a Picatinny accessory rail. A key innovation is the Rival SFx's optics-ready slide, which is pre-milled to accept multiple red dot footprints (including Shield RMSc, Trijicon RMR, and Docter) with included adapter plates. The barrel features a fluted, threaded design with a thread protector, and the slide has a distinctive cutout at the front to reduce weight and improve balance. The Rival SFx has gained a strong reputation in the firearms community for its exceptional trigger quality, accuracy, and value proposition, often being compared favorably to competitors costing significantly more. Notable design characteristics include the 90-degree flat trigger shoe, the ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release, and the inclusion of a competition holster and four interchangeable backstraps in the box.
