
The Snider-Enfield was a .577 caliber breech-loading conversion of the British Pattern 1853 Enfield muzzle-loading rifle. The conversion used a hinged breech block designed by Jacob Snider that pivoted to the side for loading. It was the British Army's first standard-issue breech-loading rifle.
