The AKM (Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovannyy) is a select-fire assault rifle developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov and adopted by the Soviet Union in 1959 as a modernized replacement for the original AK-47. Its primary design philosophy focused on reducing weight, simplifying production, and improving reliability while retaining the legendary durability of the Kalashnikov platform. The key innovation was the use of a stamped sheet-metal receiver with reinforcing rivets, replacing the milled receiver of the AK-47, which cut manufacturing costs and decreased empty weight to approximately 3.1 kg (6.8 lb). The AKM also introduced a rate-of-fire reducer (cyclic rate ~600 rounds/min), a slanted muzzle compensator to reduce muzzle rise, and a lighter bolt/carrier assembly. Its distinct reputation stems from being one of the most widely produced and conflict-proven military rifles in history, fielded by over 100 nations. Notable design characteristics include a long-stroke gas piston system, a rotating bolt, a 30-round detachable box magazine, and simple iron sights. The AKM is renowned for its reliability in adverse conditions, ease of maintenance, and suitability for mass production, solidifying its place as a quintessential infantry weapon of the 20th century.
