It was one of the first truly modular firearm designs, capable of being configured as an assault rifle, carbine, light machine gun, or belt-fed machine gun. The most common configuration was the light machine gun variant used by US special forces during the Vietnam War. The weapon is chambered in 5.56x45mm and uses a unique gas-operated piston system. The Stoner 63 was manufactured by Cadillac Gage and later by Colt.
