The Sturmgewehr 44 (StG 44) is widely recognized as the world's first true assault rifle, combining the firepower of a submachine gun with the range and accuracy of a full-power rifle. Developed by Nazi Germany during World War II, it is chambered in the intermediate 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge and features a gas-operated, tilting bolt mechanism with select-fire capability. The StG 44 introduced the concept of an intermediate cartridge that would define modern infantry rifles for the next eight decades, directly influencing designs like the AK-47 and the development of the 7.62x39mm Soviet cartridge. Its stamped steel construction and 30-round curved magazine set the template for modern assault rifles. The StG 44 saw extensive combat on the Eastern Front in the final years of World War II.
