The Type 92 heavy machine gun was the standard heavy machine gun of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. It was an air-cooled, gas-operated machine gun chambered in the 7.7x58mm Arisaka cartridge. The Type 92 was a development of the earlier Type 3 heavy machine gun, which itself was based on the French Hotchkiss design. It is often called the Woodpecker by Allied soldiers due to its distinctive slow rate of fire. The weapon was fed from metal feed strips and was mounted on a heavy tripod for sustained fire.
