The Evans Repeating Rifle is a unique 19th-century American lever-action firearm designed by Warren R. Evans, notable for its extraordinary magazine capacity. Unlike other period rifles that held 6 to 15 rounds, the Evans used an Archimedean screw mechanism in the buttstock to hold up to 34 rounds of proprietary .44 Evans ammunition, giving it the highest capacity of any repeating rifle of its era. The rifle's action cycled the helical magazine with each throw of the lever, feeding cartridges from the buttstock into the chamber. Though innovative, the proprietary ammunition and mechanical complexity hindered widespread adoption, and the rifle remains a fascinating oddity of American firearms history.
