The XM148 was an under-barrel 40mm grenade launcher developed by Colt for the M16 rifle during the Vietnam War. Designed as a lightweight alternative to the standalone M79 grenade launcher, it mounted directly beneath the M16's handguard and was fired using a trigger mechanism positioned forward of the rifle's magazine well. The XM148 was a single-shot, break-open weapon that fired the same 40x46mm low-velocity grenades as the M79, giving infantry squads organic grenade capability without requiring a dedicated grenadier. The GM-94 is a Russian pump-action grenade launcher developed by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau. It was introduced in the 1990s as a multi-purpose grenade launcher for use by Russian military and law enforcement forces. The GM-94 has a unique tubular magazine positioned above the barrel that holds three 43x30mm grenades. The weapon uses a pump-action mechanism to cycle grenades from the top-mounted magazine into the breech. It can fire a variety of grenade types, including high-explosive, thermobaric, smoke, and less-lethal rounds. The GM-94 is designed for close-quarters combat and urban warfare.
